I think you are right, Joe. The previous 9 panel was just one single
jpeg,
whereas now one can click within it to get the individual images enlarged.

Sorry, but you will have to explain to me how this format is superior
to the basic MSLP charts at 6 hour intervals.

Why not just go to

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten/fsavneur.html

Click on the model of your choice and then on Mittl.Wolken and you can
peruse the forecasts for the next 2 weeks at your leisure.

John,

The panel allows you to select an individual time frame and see the map in
an enlarged format.

Obviously a miserable New Year for you in Cardiff, or am I being too
pedantic and giving praise when not necessary !?

Joe

But that way you only get to see one chart at a time. Seeing all the
charts at once makes it easier to see the progression from one to the
next, and to spot any significant developments. As an example:

http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/avnpanel2.html

nicely shows a "pulse" of colder air travelling across Europe starting
on the 7th and arriving at the UK on the 9th.

It's also arguably quicker, if you decide that you only want to expand
one or two of the charts..

.... after recent improvements, I would now recommend:-

http://www2.wetter3.de/animation.html

where the animation panel is very good, and the output shows the
*thickness* as the coloured field, rather than the 500 hPa, which former
is more intuitive when trying to trace areas of warm and cold air.

Thanks for that, Martin. A very useful site. Prior to this
I had used the Mittel Wolken section of the Topkarten maps because they
show thickness lines, but only every 18 dam. I wish they'd use the old
(and maybe present) Met Office colours, eg 564 red etc. A minor
quibble.

Hmmm. This thread has just proved to me how 'old school' I must have
become.

But then again, maybe I am looking for different things which do not
need enlarging, such as the difference between frames, the difference
from previous runs, and the computers attempts to come up with certain
solutions that are highly unlikely (mainly involving disrupting upper
troughs), but which seem to get some people very excited.

And yes, New Year at Cardiff is particularly miserable, because not
only do we have the axe poised to drop from a great height, but now
even the union has washed its hands with us, and the locals have taken
to raping 3-year olds.
