A strange story on BBCTV news a few minutes ago. It was reported that a
message in a bottle thrown into the sea in Morecambe Bay last July has
turned up in Australia. The report said it had travelled 9000 miles. I
haven't checked the distance but, if correct, that's an average speed of
about 2 knots. A bottle would, of course, travel by a meandering route
so the actual average speed would have to be higher.

I find this story very hard to swallow. I wonder if someone gave the
bottle a helping hand on the way :-)

I heard it on R4 this morning. Wasn't found on an Ozzy beach but in
and ozzy boat yard. How it got there is anyone guess.

Even in straight lines out from the bay to off Holyhead then a straight to just off
Dakar then straight down to Cape Town and Straight to Perth, Google Earth tells me
it's close on 12,500 miles...

Not in 3 months !

Yes indeed. Well, the BBC eventually worked it out, too... but why on
earth it took them 24 hours to get there is beyond me!

"Message in a bottle 'got a lift'

Alesha Johnson got a reply to her message from Australia
A four-year-old girl's message in a bottle would have "needed help" to
get from Lancashire to Western Australia in six months, an expert has
said."
