They certainly seem to be see-sawing between a bitterly cold easterly blast over the southern half of the UK and the bitter air staying just to the east of us. Earlier this week they were forecasting 850mB temps of -20C over the south-east of the UK. Looking at the maps for the last few days really has given me the impression that a really bitter cold snap a-la mid-Jan 1987 is on a knife-edge! We will just have to wait & see which way the knife falls! This winter has seen a markedly more meridional jet stream than I've seen for a good few years! At least the sun is shining though! In fact yesterday was the sunniest day so far this year with 5.5 hours of sunshine here in High Wycombe - and dawn today was the second clear dawn so far this year! (Last one was Thurs 12th Jan) Nigel Aagh! Every time I learn something new... it pushes something old out of my brain! |
