Default Berlin -15c at 1900, yikes?

I don't know about you lot, but in these situations I like to look at facts
and figures elsewhere in europe in the hope of grasping an idea of what the
u.k. might experience in the coming few days/weeks. So to cut a long story
short, I've been having a look at current temperatures in Europe using all
the various metrological offices websites which generally give on the hour
observations and I've noted above, any ideas what Berlin's record minimum
is? Or for that matter what places on the continent have hit new lows?

Any ideas.

Max 2.5c today and currently 1.3c and falling slowly despite extensive cloud

Well even Birmingham has been below minus 15 before. The record for Berlin
is minus 22 according to

Cheers Joe, looks like it could be on the cards for Berlin to name but one
place as long as the cloud stays away.

Yes, just a couple of weeks ago when the Jan '87 cold spell
was mentioned it was pointed out that the temps over in
Europe weren't particuarly low and even with the perfect
synoptic setup, such a severe cold spell couldn't happen.
A list of impressively low temps in continental Europe for
the time of that cold spell was given, I guess they were
probably similar to what we are seing in places like Germany now.

I would think that in Jan 1684 and throughout winter 1740 that temperatures
of -20C to -25C were quite common across Britain.

German TV forecast mentioned -23°C at Usedom in NE Germany and -27°C at
Haidmühle in Bavaria last night.

Today Berlin observed its highest ever atmospheric pressure in a 99-year
record. I think it was 1049.9 hPa beating the previous record of 1049.3 hPa
in December 1993.

-20 to -30°C in Poland last night

What is even more significant is the current reading of Svalbard at latitude
78N, reading +2C in south westerly winds. Its mean January temp is around
minus 15C albeit relatively mild for its northerly location. Actually March
is its coldest month. It has reached 5C in January but as Athens is now 4C,
some 2700 miles further south, it shows that latitude is no guide to
temperature in Europe during winter.

A slight misspeak, I think, from the authority whence came the statistic.
The highest known sea-level pressure at Berlin was recorded precisely
99 years ago, on 23rd Jan 1907, when it reached something like 1058
mbar. (1066.3 mbar at Riga on the same day may well remain the
European record).
