Amazing sight in Cambridge Market Square this morning.

With the temperature around minus 1C, young man walking on the pavement
dressed in just a T-shirt and shorts and nothing whatsoever on his
feet.

I don't think it's Rag Week.

Well Cambridge doesn't have a football team of note nowadays.

But you are quite right. Trying to persuade my 15 year son to dress up
properly requires quite an effort. It doesn't seem to do any good
pointing out that the military dress for the climate and it's certainly
not macho to be cold.

It also falls on deaf ears (well ALMOST) when I remind him that two or
three years ago, an 18 year Cambridge student froze to death on the way
home form a party.

Aren't the British Antarctic Survey based in Cambridge.. maybe he's just
back from a long tour and this feels hot to him?

Football supporters try to outdo each other in the minimum clothing
contest, many of them wearing short sleeve football shirts in sub-zero
temperatures. It seems some young men consider themselves immune to
the cold.

The good thing about this is, of course, that Darwinism weeds them out
eventually.

Hi, Keith,

As you suggest, wearing as little as possible is standard dress in the
North East! The girlies keep us old men happy, though!

Having said that, even a softy like me doesn't get too worried about a
balmy -1C

Best wishes,

I occaisionally see them in those ¾ length pants things I think
how cold the bottom of their legs must get.....

I could cope (in theory) with the shorts & T-shirt as long as I was
moving around, preferably running but bare feet on what must be
an extremely cold pavement - no chance!

The amount of body heat lost that way must be enormous.
