Default Last night's fog

Here in Luton freezing fog (laden with particularly smelly pollution,
as others have mentioned) formed about 20z yesterday (Tuesday 24th),
and visibility remained 150-200m, occasionally thickening to 100-150m
until just after 04z this morning. When I retired at 05z vis had improved
to about 1000m, but it was back down to 400m when I got up at
10z, not clearing fully till after 11z.

My walk home last evening was the foggiest since mid-November.
A quick flick through the observations indicates that the fog was not
confined to Luton.

I am no longer in the habit of watching TV forecasts, but I made a
point of catching the 2230 on BBC1 and the 2330 on N24 last night.
Neither made any mention whatever of fog (or even mist). I didn't
see any of this morning's offerings ... presumably they had caught
up with reality by then?

.... although we didn't have fog at first light, certainly overnight, the
visibility was well below 500 m in this area.

.... like you, I no longer make any effort to monitor BBC weather
broadcasts; the only one I caught yesterday was a late afternoon
offering where the spread of the 'blue' for frost areas was highlighted:
fog certainly wasn't mentioned - unlike in the days of Mr McCaskill's
GOF-graphics, we don't get an explicit representation of such now ;-)

Martin.

If the BBC had forecast fog it would have had square edges.

We've had it all here in Ramsgate -- fog from dawn until about 1030, then
clear sky, now we have patchy low grey cloud blowing across from the NE.

In my weekly forecast issued last thursday I gave fog a mention as I thought
that the air must stagnate somewhat if it got cold de-coupling from the
geostrophic flow.

" Staying mostly dry and cold on Wednesday and Thursday, again with frost and
fog at night with mainly light winds. Some freezing fog persisting all day in
places. During Thursday a cold and brisk east wind could set in in southern
areas making it feel raw. Cloud amounts variable on these two days, but
generally a lot of cloud, particularly in the east.
On Friday and Saturday, the high pressure regime should persist with the
possibility of a fresh to strong east wind bringing snow flurries into England
and Wales. Obviously at this stage details on amounts etc are difficult to
predict but the signal is there for some wintry weather, particularly in
southern areas at the end of the week. Staying cold generally with daytime
maxima above freezing. However, there is a 30% risk of very cold air with
sub-zero daytime maxima getting into SE England for a while. "

Friday and Saturday may come off too with the cold pool due to come across the
south! :-O :-)

Will.
