I heard on BBC Breakfast TV this morning that some newspaper(s) were
saying that we were due to get the snowfall that has recently afflicted the NE of the US. Just exactly where do they get this nonsense? Surely not any respectable weather forecasting organisation? Martin (Incredulous once again at the stupidity of the press and/or quack forecasting organisations). |

I've heard people at work quote this and saying it must be coming our way! |

I've heard people at work quote this and saying it must be coming our way! This is because back in the 1960s (at least), there were several occasions when precisely that situation did occur, I can remember it clearly. Cold spells that is, not necessarily snowfalls. I did start to think (way back then) that this may be a permanent indicator of severely cold weather to come but clearly, it was not. This may (back then) have been something to do with the long wave patterns or whatever... but I haven't seen it occur in recent years, except perhaps on an isolated occasion. --- Dave |

Its more of a pressure-system situation. There is a good chance we could
get the pressure system that gave the snowfall in New York, because of a system of pressure movements in the Northern Hemisphere. However, by the time it has arrived here, it will have either weakened, or be present under different conditions. I.E. the Low pressure will not be dragging cold air down from Continental Canada, and across the great lakes (Lake Snow-Effect), in our case, it is likely to stall just over Ireland so dragging quite warm air from the Azores for a time, replaced by cold and damp conditions as the low pushes North. The latest GFS shows no snow up to 14 days ahead, but its validity is questionable after 6-7 days. Mike www.dudleyweather.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk |

It just looks like bad journalism to me! -- Rob Overfield Hull |
