Default Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather stations

Just in case anyone's missed the news, the revised Vantage Pro 2
stations are now in stock. It will probably be a couple of months
before there's a full range of accessories, with wireless repeaters,
in particular, not due in until March, though other accessories eg the
optional anemometer wireless transmitter are already here.

To recap, the VP2 stations are a limited revision of the existing VP1
stations. Although there are a few cosmetic and detail differences,
the only key difference is that the VP2 wireless stations are using a
distinct wireless technology which gives increased wireless range. The
VP2 stations are unchanged in general accuracy and feature
specifications and so existing VP1 owners have no reason to consider
upgrading, except in the specific circumstance where longer wireless
range or a more powerful wireless signal (eg to penetrate further into
a building) might be desirable. We've yet to test the VP2 wireless
range in practice but expect it now to exceed 100m clear
line-of-sight.

Finally, a version of the Weatherlink data logger with a native USB
interface is now also available.

Default Davis Vantage Pro 2 weather stations

Just curious John, I currently have a WMII which is plugged in via
WeatherLink into a 15 way D Serial Port, works fine. Is there any
benifit of upgrading to the USB interface, speed etc? Are we tallking
about an adapter RJ11 to USB, or a complete new logger and susequently
what would be the cost.?

Many thanks

The 7862 logger for WMII stations is of course a different animal from
the 6510 logger and I'm not aware that there are any plans to make a
native USB version of the 7862 logger.

However, it is perfectly possible to use an external serial-to-USB
converter with the 7862. Davis make one (8434) priced around £22 +VAT
+P&P. There are many others around from other makers in your local PC
store, very possibly cheaper, but they don't all work equally well,
especially the older designs, and for the sake of saving a couple of
quid might not be the most hassle-free choice compared to buying the
Davis one.
