Could someone explain the significance of the polar low ,and when was the
last one to affect the UK? given this weeks chance of one.

Tom has answered the first part, by providing a link to the relevant
part of the FAQ. As for the second part, you need to remember that any
single polar low may affect only a fairly small area, as they are
smallish features. There may well have been at least one during the cold
northerly spell that we had in late November.
