Default February 2006: Synoptic Overview

The Atlantic remained quite active until about Feb 19, but
the last segment of the month was very blocked.
Anticyclones somewhere or other controlled the UK's
weather until the 11th and again from the 20th onwards,
so it was another generally dry month with no serious
gales.

The mean sea-level chart shows that the normal Icelandic Low
is split between centres of 1000 mbar off Labrador and 1003
mbar in the Barents Sea.. There are subsidiary low centres
over Denmark and near Sicily. Highest pressure (around 1020
mar) is found near the Azores, east of Moscow, and over
northern Greenland. Pressure is almost uniform over the British
Isles although there is a suggestion of a N to NWly flow over
England and Wales.

The central feature of the sea-level pressure anomaly pattern
is a huge area of above-average pressure covering much of
the northern Atlantic, Greenland, Scandinavia and the
British Isles. The main anomaly centres a
+8mbar over SE Greenland
-7mbar in the Russian Arctic
-7mbar over northern Quebec
-3.5 mbar over Ukraine
-3mbar over the Mediterranean Basin
Over the British Isles pressure anomaly ranges from zero in
the Channel Islands and Kent to +4.5mbar at Stornoway.
The anomalous flow is NE-ly.
