Default There has been an episode of toy-flinging in Bolton.......

No snow here, but it was close. I was promised it but in the end
the plunge of the showers was rather to the south into Mersyside
& Cheshire. Some quite impressive shower clouds visible from
here which must have been to the south of Manchester.

Shaping up into a seriously cold night, it's already -2.5C and
there's a chance I could beat my all time record low of -7.0C
recorded late Dec last year. -6.3C last night.

And it's supposed to be spring

Snow this morning here, Col, but nothing thereafter. Some huge Cb to my S
and a report from Chester city centre of three inches this morning.

It's OK Col we had the snow for you,the first since Christmas Day 2004, and
the attendant road chaos with the M53 totally solid with traffic after a
couple of accidents in the morning rush hour.
We also had a couple claps of thunder with the heavier snow showers around
midday.
Snow mostly melted in the afternoon but like you temperatures falling
rapidly away now.
Currently -0.5°C (1920 GMT)
best regards,
Alan

I assume you mean the first lying snow since Dec 2004.
I don't begrude areas that see little snowfall a dose of the stuff, from
pictures on NW Tonight there was proper lying snow even in the
centre of Liverpool which must be a relatively rare event.
Falls of the order of 1-2 inches are fairly common here, but there
hasn't beem much this winter as it has been so dry.

From the comments Joe made, it looks like South Manchester was
about as far North as it got.

There was indeed, Will, but this rapidly disappeared. One thing that has
struck me since living here is that the city centre can be a good 2-3degC
warmer than out here the suburbs.

Currently -3.2degC at 20:51Z

It is; I lived there for five years in the 1990s, and I can only remember
one occasion (1996, I think) when that happened. It did so with a vengeance
as well - something like six inches of the stuff!

I think it was February 1996 that what must have been a polar low
gave an unexpected 3 inches of snow in a couple of hours here.
I wonder if this was the same event. I can't imagine Liverpool getting
6 inches of snow in other than a polar low event.

That date sounds just right to me; I was living a few miles out of the
centre at the time (on the Aigburth/Grassendale border) and there were 6-
8 inches there. I walked into the city the morning after the fall (about
4 miles, from memory) expecting the depth to fall away considerably, and
was surprised when it didn't. Every other winter we just got slushy
sleety stuff; hail was actually a better bet for making things look
white!

Polar lows are no respectors of altitude, they can dump 6 inches on
the front at Blackpool as in the hills. In this case I suspect Liverpool
got more than me simply because it's futher west and nearer to the
low and indeed the Irish Sea the waters of which are the generator
of such a feature after all.
