What's wrong with UKMO? They've gone all buzz wordy off late. I popped in to
yjeir website today and had a look at January and February's news updates http://www.met-office.gov.uk/health/news/index.html Blimey they've been so enclosed by the Labour Party they've finally gone all native. Remember the days when forecast spoke of occluded fronts atmospheric pressure, warm fronts, precipitation etc you know the stuff. Well now they are more concerned with PCT's, IPP's, PCP's, COPD's hold on here's an example "Break-out sessions were run at the West Country NPDT Learning Workshop 3. There was a lot of interest among the PCTs about participating in the Health Forecasting project." Bloody hell steady on is there no end to this nonsense? Apparently not a.. encourage practices to stratify patients so that they are ready to receive forecasts and make calls; b.. distribute patient and clinicians packs to all those involved; c.. investigate holding a patient workshop; d.. encourage the local paper to run a piece on health forecasting and follow it up with regular advertising of the forecast; e.. investigate becoming involved with text and e-mail trials." Well I've always objected to bad language but what a load of PC S&M SD C.R.A.P it all is. With this sort of joint venture developing I can forsee all sorts of exciting initiatives and a possible smearing of the boundaries ------------------------------------------------------------ "Ah Nurse Fish can you please change that bed barometer!" "Hello UKMO it's Alf Toots the PCT Chiropodist for Saundersfoot. Mrs Crumm's corn is playing up again so break out the weather warning amber alerts " "Dr I'm feeling under the weather" "Never mind Mr Snow try these new UKMO patient packs take one after meals with a glass of preciptation." "Ah Nurse Fish have you done the OBS " "Yes but I'm concerned about Mrs Blow her pressure has fallen very fast and she's become wet and windy" ------------------------------------------------------------ Another of these joint initiatives will displaying forecast at your GP surgery - what ever will they think off next. Can you imagine it. "I'm just off down to surgery to see the weather forecast" "Did you make an appointment love" "No I'm seeing the duty forecaster" Now I would have thought it would have been easier seeing the forecast at home! |

I work for the NHS as a data analyst and am involved in part with the data colation of this / similar study. As Im sure you are aware, the weather has an impact on all our lives wether through stopping us enjoying our social activities or more seriously, our health. COPD is for those that dont know Chronic Obstrcutive Pulmonary Disease and is prevelant in areas of past coal mine activity or other industry that produced very small dust particulates. The weather effects can be felt by these vulnerable members of society and the sudden onset of a cold spell or prolonged damp / wet conditions sets of this type of condition off. Hospitals have to be able to plan and forecast admissions and discharges and work in relation with the met office to produce models and forecast possible admissions on a daily basis in these particular areas. There are more variables to consider in the NHS than one can possibly poke a stick at and being flippant about what is a real concern to a lot of people is somewhat arrogant and judgement misplaced. Ian I think they call it showboating-hows the MRSA? The MRSA in my particular trust is really low, although that being said , most cases of MRSA are actuallt brought into the hospital environment from external sources, namely the patient themselves. Most people carry it on them most of the time, it only becomes an issue when it affects an open wound and the papers then cry Dirty hospitals..... Bit sensationalist really Ian |
