I am used to seeing ice at the Northern (top) end of the Gulf of Bothnia at
this time of year, but is it unusual to see the ice around Aland and the Finnish Islands west of Turku ? Seems not much further to go before the ice reaches Sweden! http://saturn.unibe.ch/rsbern/noaa/d...00/n1bcurr.jpg (NOAA18 1148Z) The link above may not work when it gets updated! There is a noaa18 HRPT image of the Gulf Bothnia on my web page from just
before midday today. The ice covered areas are not in doubt. The areas you mention, Phil, are usually joined by ice at this time of year and before. http://www.btinternet.com/~wokingham...1157-c-fi.html -- Bernard Burton Wokingham, Berkshire, UK. Thanks Bernard for the image. There's obviously ice floating in the Northern
part that looks like water - I guess the 'while solid' areas is ice with snow cover. I just wondered if the persistent cold of this Winter had led to more ice there than usual. Phil |

Phil -- www.layton.me.uk/meteo.htm I can't correlate that pic with the Finnish chart at http://www.fimr.fi/en/itamerinyt/jaatilanne.html nor with the one produced by the Swedish Hydrological Institute. They both show the Baltic (including the Gulf of Bothnia) entirely frozen down to the latitude of Stockholm. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. If you click on the pdf (on the link you gave) the ice in the southern baltic is not 100% cover (7-8/10) so perhaps that would explain the satellite picture ? Martin |
