Philip Eden Luton (Round Green) 155m .... interesting! BBC South were reporting over the past couple of days a 'gas-leak' like smell; had the local gas people out etc., but our local weather person has been putting it down to possible pollution. With a southeasterly, it *may* be and we did get these scares in the winter when I worked in central London. Usually traced back to Belgian or NE French industrial sources. In this case though (at least at the start of the event), the wind direction was wrong - so they have been chasing about Hampshire for other sources of pollution. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/h...re/4174801.stm Martin. -- FAQ & Glossary for uk.sci.weather at:- http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/uswfaqfr.htm |

If on a light evening (before street lights are lit) you travel a little way up the A6 to Barton, then turn right toward Hitchin, it is possible to look back over Luton from that hillside. On such evenings one may observe the yellowish 'fog' which floats over the town - maybe it is visible all the time (when daylight) but I do not know that. It is not as bad as the similar 'fog' which hovers over St. Helens although according to a friend of mine who lives there, St. Helens is the most (air) polluted town in England. -- Gianna Stefani www.buchan-meteo.org.uk |

Gianna, that is the hillside upon which I live. The yellow-brown pollution haze which you mention is only occasionally visible ... on days of light or no wind with high RH and otherwise good visibility ... and comprises diesel fumes along the line of the M1 which parallels the western horizon as viewed from up here. Otherwise Luton is no more polluted than any other town in Southeast England now that all the manufacturing industry has gone, much as some might like to think otherwise :-p Philip Eden |

In recent years this does not seem to have occurred which is either due to the works closure or emission control - probably the former given the collapse of manufacturing industry. Alan |
