The recent stormy weather is of course not new as posters have pointed out.
On this day there have been several big blows. In 1952 a severe gale swept the north of Scotland and winds exceeded hurricane strength in places. At Grimsetter[ near Kirkwall] in the Orkneys the mean wind was 85 mph-90 mph. Gusts reached 120 mph. on Stornoway in the Hebrides. There was much damage and some loss of life. The pressure was 952 mb at Lerwick in the Shetlands. In 1968 there was a severe gale with a wind reaching 135 mph at Great Dun Fell and 125 mph at Lowther Hill, Lanarkshire. Many gusts in Scotland of 104 mph. Tremendous damage to property in Glasgow with loss of life. Whole swathes of forest were felled and shipping sunk in the Clyde.
