I seem to remember something about 850mb but that must have been upper
atmosphere.

I think in the 910-940mb region for hurricanes is what seems to be the case
from various news reports when they are taking place I have seen.

According to an article in Weather (Feb 1987, A new north Atlantic low
pressure record: S.D.Burt), the lowest global sea level pressure to that
time was 870 mbar recorded by a dropsonde in the eye of typhoon Tip on 12
October 1979. The Atlantic low pressure record referred to in the article
was 916 mbar on 15 December 1986. In another article by the same author in
Weather April 1993 (Another new north Atlantic low pressure record), the
deep low of 10 January 1993 is thought to have reached a minimum pressure of
between 912 and 915 mbar.

I remember reading an anecdote about a man who bought a barometer on the
date of the hurricane that hit Galveston in the 1930's. It was reading
so low he thought the thing was damaged and took it back to the shop.
When he got home his house had blown away.

What had it been reading? Anyone know?

I used to think that something like 888mb was the lowest for an
Atlantic hurricane..methinks Gilbert in ..hmm..late 80s or was it
early 90s?

Default How low does an Hurricane go!

For a tornado, 100 mb according to the 2005 Guiness Book Of Records.

That isn't necessarily the record of course. Getting the equiptment into
a funnel is such a rare thing to do. 100 millibars may be an high! You'd
really need a series over a significant period with more than one
detector -preferably of different types (both or all in agreement of
course.)
