Default 18 years since the great cold spell of january 1987. What is the lowest temp in home counties?

"Maxima of -8°C to -12°C were recorded at several places in the English
Midlands during the cold spells of December 1981 and January 1982,
especially where patches of freezing fog lingered. "

Sorry Gavin, I know that wasn't what you asked! That's obviously England
minimum. I'm working on the lowest daytime max for England.

I had -8C and I believe that a maximum of -9.1C was recorded in Surrey
or Sussex. Apparently this spell delivered the coldest 48 hour period in
Britain since 1740.

The Weather Log for the month says cautiously: "...it seems likely that
it was one of the coldest spells of weather in the south since January
1740..."

LOL.

No. I am still waiting. STILL waiting. Still waiting for Tom Presutti's
winter forecastS(!) to come off. Still waiting for Gavin Partridge's
winter forecast to come off. Still waiting for Andy Woodcock's winter
forecast (2002) to come off.
I am very, VERY angry.:-(

Keep trolling, troller!

Damien,
How can you still be waiting for a 2002 forecast to come off, when it is now
2005.
That makes no sense whatsoever.

May I ask how old you are?

TY.

Yes it does. I was PROMISED all of MY LOST DREAMS - i.e.: of the late
1990s decade - to/would COME OFF during that so-called "winter" of
2002, by the following people:
-Brian Gaze*,
-Tom Presutti - x2,
-Gavin Partridge,
-Gary Sarre,
-Andy Woodcock,
-Will Hand,
-"toad",
-"badger" - x2 again, I think,
-Bill Giles - the 2004 "cold" winter,
-and, lastly, Metcheck, over the 2005 "winter" forecast, + the
so-called "widespread snowfall" event of December 2002, too.

There ARE others, but these are all that come into my memory, at least
right now.

* Footnote: Brian Gaze has spoken with me in great detail in e-mail,
explained what happened, meaning that, with a mutual understanding
between us, we are now on amicable terms, and I respect Brian very much
for taking the time to respond to me that he in fact did.

Would you like to see the old, archived forecasts of this particular
so-called non-"event"?

That makes no sense whatsoever.

I am now waiting for the APOLOGIES. I have since spring 2002. So far, I
am making progress, and Tom Presutti is my next target, but Gavin will
no doubt be the toughest nut to crack, with all of my e-mail addresses
- currently on block.:-( (By the way, the e-mail addresses were
inherited from an old project from YEARS AGO too, from a time that was
even YEARS BEFORE the 2002 "winter" forecasts were all
near-simultaneously released; I just recycle the old things, but they
are currently no longer in general use, certainly as far as I am
concerned. I did NOT just create them all for the purposeness of this
so-called "trolling", which I am in fact greatly said to be doing.:-(
)

May I ask how old you are?

I have told this information already. Please do pay more attention in
future. Most probably older than you, though.

By the way, can I also now just, for a brief moment, take the time to
thank "John P" for the thread that he has created - at least in my
honour(!) :-) - over on The Weather Outlook discussion forum, below:
http://www.theweatheroutlook.com/wea...TOPIC_ID=34249
by saying that, it truly is nice to be appreciated.:-)

I demand to know why I was banned!

I recorded a 12-hr max of -9.2°C (08Z to 20Z) on 12 Jan 87
here at Warlingham, Surrey, 556ft (169m). The 24-hr max was -8.9°C.
It's a COL grade B station. It was sunny, with a snow cover of about 3
inches and a light ENE'ly. In the early evening snow started to fall
out of cloud so thin you could easily see the moon and it continued on
and off for another 48 hrs or so until a level depth of 39 cm (16") lay
in the back garden. Melted and measured it all came to 27.8 mm.
There were 10 consecutive maxima below 0°C and 3 below -5°C. The max
on the 12th seems to have been about the lowest anywhere but it was
probably about a degree colder a few miles to the south at the top of
the Downs at 877 ft (267 m).
The upper air sounding showed a DALR from the surface to about
700 mb and the 1000-500 mb thickness was 498 dam, a record or nearly so
for the region.
When I started recording in 1983 I thought the lowest max I
would ever record would be about -6°C, possibly -7°C, in a nasty
Sc-laden 15-kn ENE'ly. I could scarcely believe my eyes, out to the
screen every half-hour or so. The sun was out, there was a gentle
breeze, but it just wouldn't warm up!

I was living down in London in January 1987, and I remember it being
cold. I have vague memories of three different cold snaps that month
(two of which closed the office I was working in, the pipes burst!, two
days off on full pay was OK!). Does anyone have any temperatures for
north west London (Harlesden / Willseden area) for back then? I've
often wondered how cold it got back then.

I was working at a Wastewater Treatment Plant in Rainham, Essex and the
sewage entering the plant (which would normally be about 10C) was freezing
on the screen bars and forming an ice wall blocking the flow. An engineer
developed some in-situ heaters to prevent the whole system backing up.Also
the whole N/NE facing area had to be insulated with tarpaulins to prevent
the wind chill. This has never happened before or since as far as I know.
