writes My poor plum tree is suffering and has only given a small crop and my apple tree is not doing much better. advice? suggestions? I don't think there's much you can do but accept that you have good years and bad. We've had a reasonable crop here, but as well as the wasps, there has been a plague of flies on the plums and we have been left with very few. I'm no tree expert, but I think watering only brings the roots up towards the surface and isn't good for the future well-being of the tree. I walked passed our tree earlier today and a gust of wind blew half the leaves off ![]() -- Anita Evans North Cumbria (anita[at]ra.evans.clara.co.uk to reply by e-mail) |

A few days back, here in Bracknell, a large (and fairly ancient) Cedar
tree shed a large branch across a local path used by people going to and from the shops - apparently (according to local press), it narrowly missed falling on someone passing by in a wheelchair. The local council have blamed the extended dry spell (we are running 65% roughly of average rainfall since end-January) for the stress on the tree - but I suppose it could be argued that the tree is pretty ancient anyway ...... certainly it is beginning to be noticed that leaves are simply 'shutting down' now - turning dry/brown (rather than going through the traditional autumn change), so lack of moisture (and high evapotranspiration) must be playing a part.
