Default buying a new weather station?

After lurking on this group for ages, I have decided to come out into
the open and ask for some advice.

I want to buy a weather station which I can link to my PC for data
logging and display. We live in a very exposed spot on the west coast
of the Isle of Arran and need something sturdy!

I seem to remember people saying that wireless weather stations are more
problematic than the cabled ones. Is this still true?

At the moment I am thinking about a Davis weather station, but I have no
fixed ideas.

Any advice will be very welcome.

Current external temperature 4C. Fairly lively wind blowing - could
tell you more if we had a weather station :-)))

interested in the responses you get

The answer we got to from lurking here and reading sites recommended or
noted was that we want a Davis Vantage Pro but we will have to wait till the
summer and money coming in
It will be interesting to compare notes later -- we are just north of Oban

davis vantage pro 1!

I have one! Great stuff! had it 4 months or so now.

Use weather display software to capture the data onto a pc!

When you get a vantage pro station, get it wireless! Also get it with the
console too! as it acts as a data storage device when the pc isnt turned on!
so you dont loose data!

the vantage pro 1's should be cheap now as vp2 is out, but the only
improvement is wireless technology, nothing to do with weather!!

Yes there are some attractive deals around now on VP1 stations from
ourselves and others, but AFAIK there are very few standard cabled or
wireless VP1 stations left in the UK now and so anyone interested
should make enquiries literally asap.

VP1 Plus stations (ie with the built-in solar radiation intensity and
UV sensors) are still in reasonable supply and will probably still be
available for a month or two yet.

As an owner of a Davis Vantage Pro since 2001 I can recommend these
stations. With the new wireless technology on the Mk2 model reception
problems seem to be less from all of the reports although I have had few
problems of this kind since my station and console are close together.

Given your exposed position the mounting pole for the station and the
anemometer clearly need to be heavy duty as the stations seem very sturdy. I
have seen a report of an incident where the pole collapsed taking the
station with it without damaging the station so they seem quite strong.

Wireless stations are much easier to install and there is flexibilty in
siting the console. Also the range of acccessories is greater. They do cost
more however.

Default buying a new weather station?

My Davis Weather Wizard 3 has an intermittent sticking reed switch in the
wind vane, which gets worse each month.
I am reluctant to get a replacement vane and I don't think it's possible to
just change the reed as it looks like a sealed unit, so am thinking of
upgrading to the Oregon Pro WMR 928. A lot cheaper than the Davis -
admittedly with less features, but will suit my purpose.
Any comments on this and the reed problem ?
Thanks in advance.

I had a sticking reed some years ago and returned it to the supplier
(name forgotten). It was replaced after I convinced the service tech
that it only stuck when the temperature was lower than ?°C. I forget
how much it cost to replace but it was overshadowed by my falling off
the roof when reinstalling...

I had a sticking anemometer reed switch which cost me about £30 to replace.
I had to send it off to be repaired so I was without the vane for about a
fortnight. Cheper than a new station as long as the old one has the
feartures you need.

I recently had a sticking reed switch in an Oregon Anemometer. This was
replaced by the supplier. Comments on this group, at the time, indicated
that it is not an unknown problem with Oregon.

What we need is either more reliable reed switches or, at the very
least, units that are not sealed so that we can replace these switches
ourselves.

With the Davis equipment I was led to believe that the stik reed switch was
a particular problem with early vantage Pro stations. From what I have seen
recently it seems to have been a problem with other models. More recent
stations may be better but I don't know if this is the case.
