One way is through this site

http://www.arl.noaa.gov/ready/cmet.html

Start by entering a location (either an ICAO designator or WMO station
number or a lat/lon). Click "continue" then beside "Interactive map"
click the dropdown box "choose a forecast dataset" and select the
required model. There's then a whole range of products to select from
but with a bit of trial and error I'm sure you'll be able to get it to
produce what you want.

Just wading through the data. Can't seem to find a colour temperature
display (as used by wetterzentrale.de) for North america but no doubt it's
in there somewhere. Incredible amount of data.

Thanks for the pointer,

David
