About 2 years ago on a Wednesday evening about 5pm we had a thunder storm
with snow. I had never seen thunder and lightning before with snow in all my (quite long) life. This was in North Surrey by the way near Croydon and Sutton. Does anybody on this friendly group remember it? Is it really that unusual? What caused it? Penn |

Penn I think it was in January 2004, like you it's the first time I saw a thunderstorm with heavy snow. It's quite unusual in this country, because you need very cold air undercutting mild air. I was in Coulsdon that evening...the traffic came to a standstill and I saw two motorcyclists come off their bikes in the space of 10 minutes. Had about 4 inches of snow here - the local kids loved it. |

All depends on whereabouts in the country you are, Joe. On coasts exposed to polar maritime airmasses heavy snow showers accompanied by a single "flash-bang" are quite common in winter. On the west and north coasts of Scotland there are more thunderstorm days in winter than in summer. Dave Wheeler might have some thoughts on this, being well and truly in the firing line. Norman. This was my enhanced MODIS image for the day after, showing the extent of lying snow. It was published soon after in "Weather" IIRC, though I don't have a copy. http://www.mikett.plus.com/29-jan-2004.jpg -- Mike Coleraine 55.13°N 6.69°W posted 03/04/2006 16:41:52 UTC |

Tell that to my son zapped by a bolt from a snowcloud in West Wales... Does she mean the "Thundersnow" band that worked it's way down the country? Came through here like a train.. excellent! Tracked oit on radar and told partner "In the next few mins there will be a strong wind accompanied by sudden rain turning immediatly to heavy snow qalong with thunder..." Stood in the front garden and saw it move up the street... My forcasting went up in her estimation, never told her i had tracked it for hours and read descriptions of it's passing on here. ;o) Les -- Remove Frontal Lobes to reply direct. http://armsofmorpheus.blogspot.com/ http://www.xenu.net/ http://www.venganza.org/index.htm Les Hemmings a.a #2251 SA |

I didn't realise I'd witnessed something so unusual last month, when on 4th March I posted to here about thunder and snow.
