Default Today's model interpretation (24/01/05)

Here is a summary of the latest NWP output for noon on Friday. Issued 0603z,
24/01/05.

The models show good agreement of a northerly to end the working week. It
will be milder than at present, due to returning maritime air in the high's
circulation. Beyond that things are mixed, with the GFS showing a textbook
cold and snowy easterly and the JMA showing retrogression leading to a
northerly blast. The other runs generally keep the high anchored to the
west, albeit with cold air never far away to the east. The GFS is likely to
be a cold outlier, but nonetheless previous days have given the easterly
scenario a 40% or so chance of coming off. As ever, more runs are needed.

ECMWF: http://64.246.48.81/pics/Recm1201.gif
High pressure lies to the west, while a ridge covers Scandinavia. NNE'lies
and NE'lies cover the UK, followed by northerlies and NE'lies on day 6 as
the high to the west builds. On day 7 the high moves northwards and builds
further, allowing NE'lies to cover most of the UK.

MetO: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rukm1201.html
As with the ECM run, high pressure is located to the west and it brings
northerlies for all. The high builds and drifts northwards at T+144,
maintaining northerlies for most. The exception is SE England, which lies
under colder NE'lies.

GFS: http://expert.weatheronline.co.uk/pslv_frame.htm
Northerlies cover the UK, with a high to the SW of the UK ridging NE'wards
to a ridge over Scandinavia. 850hPa temperatures vary from -5C over parts of
Scotland and Wales to -1C over Northern Ireland. The high to our SW moves
NE'wards, builds and merges with the retrogressing Siberian High to form a
large, E/W aligned high over Scandinavia. This has the effect of pulling
very cold NE'lies across much of the UK. The high builds over southern
Norway at T+168, giving a classic "Scandinavian High" setup. Moderate
ENE'lies cover the UK, bringing cold air to all areas except NW Scotland.
Day 8 sees the high decline slightly, although cold easterlies persist. A
trough is moving westwards towards the UK and by day 10 it lies over the
North Sea, with ENE'lies for all. The air is bitterly cold for southern
areas, with 850hPa temepratures as low as -14C over central southern
England. The low over France moves northwards for day 10, with NE'lies and
cold air persisting over the UK.

GEM: http://www.meteocentre.com/models/glb00_120.html
The UK lies under moderate to strong northerlies, this time with a high to
the WSW. 850hPa temperatures vary from -1C over SE England to +5C over
Scotland and Northern Ireland. Northerlies and NNE'lies affect the UK at
T+144 as the high tilts along a NE/SW axis, followed by more of the same on
day 7 with the high building to the west.

GME/DWD:

The German run is yet another to show northerlies and again high pressure
lies to the west. The high declines and moves NE'wards to bring NE'lies for
all at T+144. T+168 sees the high build over the northern North Sea, with
easterlies across much of the UK (and westerlies for northern Scotland).

JMA: http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/Rjma1201.html
Once again there's a high to the west and northerlies for the UK, this time
with 850hPa temperatures from -6C over Kent to +4C over northern Scotland.
NE'lies and northerlies cover the UK at T+144 as a ridge topples southwards,
followed by northerlies on day 7. By day 8 the high to the west builds,
bringing strong northerlies across the UK.

NOGAPS: http://129.13.102.67/wz/pics/ngp10.prp.120.europeg.gif
A ridge is located to the west, bringing northerlies for all.

GM CPTEC: http://www.cptec.inpe.br/prevnum/Global126_sx6_Gl.shtml
A deep low covers Denmark, with northerlies as the result.

KMA: http://www.kma.go.kr/kma03/gif/g21nh_smsr_120.gif
The UK lies under northerlies, yet again with high pressure to the west.
