Default May 2006 in Canterbury

May was a rather dull and disappointing month. Of note in particular is
the exceptional amount of rainfall in comparison with previous months. A
total of 87.9mm fell during May which is 194% of average. That makes May
the wettest month since before September 2004. However, the rainfall
deficit for 2006 is still significant and the potential for serious
drought conditions continues unless the summer months prove to also be
significantly wetter than average. The month was also characterised by a
rather consistent run of just-above-average temperatures - few hot days
(bar 26.6C on the 4th) and few cold nights (except 2.6C on the 31st).
The mean temperature for the month was 13.1C, 1.5C above average. The
last three days of the month were particularly disappointing with a
maxima of only 15.0C, 13.8C and 14.0C respectively. Curiously, the two
coldest minima of the month were on the 1st (2.9C) and the 31st (2.6C).
