Default A weeks unbroken sunshine.

The last week (Weds 31st May - Tuesday 6th of June) has been remarkble
for the amount of sunshine in west Cornwall. Apart from a little thin
high cloud on Sunday it's been close to the maximum possible. - Almost
ceratinly around 105 hours for the week.

If anyone can provide me with the figures for Falmouth for w/c last
Tuesday 31st May I would appreciate it (Philip / Roger?) - I realise
there's a few hours to go.

I know Falmouth recorded 46 hours Weds - Friday, approx 15 hours on
Saturday, 15.3 hours yesterday, making around 76 hours for those 5 days
alone.

If the figure is around 105 hours - which it must be, is that a new
record for a weeks sunshine in Cornwall?

A bit cooler here today after the exceptional warmth of the last 3
days, which all just topped 24C. Today a sea breeze, meant my max was
20.9 (24.2 yesterday), the lowest since 19.1 on Thursday. Right on the
seafront (PZ heliport) 23C yesterday, just 18C today. Still warm in the
strong sunshine.

Hi,

I agree Graham as I've once again been down Newquay way at the weekend and
arrived back this very pm, glorious weather indeed.

However I have a gripe, I do hope that people never take heed of the hourly
ceefax (page 404) reports as you would think the weekend had been quite a
different story. On numerous occasions over the past few days, St. Mawgan
(Newquay) was reporting various observations of partly cloudy/sunny
intervals/cloudy/fog/clear (at 7pm?) Well the chap/chapess doing these
observations needs to find another occupation. My caravan location, approx.
21/2 miles north of St. Mawgan, indicated the only possible description that
may have been correct at the time was the Sea Mist report (reported as Fog)
for a couple of hours on Sunday morning. A photograph of a beetroot
coloured torso can be sent to the observer if required

Why are these reports so misleading and is she/he an anti-tourist if there
is such a thing. If I had counted any sun interrupting clouds over the past
four days that may have been around, it would have numbered no more than a
dozen and they were inland.

Whinge over.

I've noticed just the same thing.

Good, seems to happen all the time irrespective of the time of year.

1 problem being that the Newquay the reports are actually from the airfield,
which is some way inland, where
there is often some cumulus development along the sea breeze limit, when
Newquay itself is cloudless.

I know the location well and should have stated that it is clearly visible
from my position at the caravan site. Newquay and said location as you have
quite correctly stated would also have had endless sunshine this past few
days

Having said that I hadn't seen a single cumulus in the sky anywhere for
week until this afternoon
even then they were small and at no time obscured the sun.

Well Graham, I have come back home to Newbury now, hee hee!

The sunshine figures for Falmouth (and probably Scilly) give of a truer
indication of the last weeks weather on the coast.

Graham

PS! Do you have any friends that can provide comparable data from a nearby
site on a continual basis and maybe these obvious errors
could be investigated further. I know ceefax is far from the best way to
study live data but from a caravan it was my only choice, Oxford and
Salisbury
are usually spot on though for my home location.

I would say that apart from the occasional high cloud, and a small bit of
cumulus build up this afternoon - it has been the same here in south-east
Devon, virtually unbroken sunshine for the last week.

Today was noticeably cooler than the last week with a maximum of only 20.4C
today at 14:04. The temperature was tempered by a steady breeze from the ESE
bringing cool air in off the sea.

www.xcweather.co.uk/ gives current data for St Mawgan & Penzance,
amongst others in Cornwall. 08:50 this morning it was 17C at St.
Mawgan.

http://mysite.wanadoo-members.co.uk/...rtestdata.html
gives current data for ST Mawes (across the river from Falmouth). Up to
18C there at 09:15, as it is here in Penzance.

www.landsendweather.info/met/mainframe.htm gives data for the cliff top
near Land's End, where it's already 17.9.

The MetO forecast maximum for Newquay & Penzance today is 18C. Says it
all really.
If I don't get to 23C I'll be disappointed.

Graham, Camborne recorded 99.2h on the KZ sensor and 98.5h
on the CS recorder (confirming my contention that the KZ
actually records more than the CS during spells of continuous sun)
for the seven days May 29 to June 4, plus another 14h Monday and
almost 15h yesterday. Culdrose (CS) had 99.2h for the week,
Pendennis (CS) 90.5h (but I wouldn't trust their figure), and St Mawgan
100.9h (CS).

I doubt it's a record even for the county ... unfortunately most of
my books and papers are currently boxed up so I can't really
research it. If the sunny spell should continue for 14 days, though, it
could well be up there with the very best.

Could we persuade you to add a basic sunshine sensor at your
site? Is your horizon sufficiently clear?

Philip

Philip,

Thanks for information. Looks like another day of virtually unbroken
sunshine for the coast today, so another 14 hours or so of sunshine
likely. Some limited cumulus inland, slightly towards the north coast,
which will probably affect Camborne.

I had been considering a sunshine sensor. I would need to mount it on
top of the house roof, so as to clear the shade from some trees. I
would then only miss the first 20 minutes or so immediately after
sunrise.

Any recommendations as to which model & where from?

Graham

Not from Newquay, I must stop this bitching. Thanks for those links, I will
use when comparing live reports from my parents when they are down that way.

Incidentally if you look quickly before it disappears, the 1250BST reading
actually compared favourably with the FOG description given on ceefax page
404 at that time. Although, not being a meteorologist myself, does 3200ft
with visibility of 4500m constitute FOG. It still also claims to be this way
at 1400BST according to ceefax.

Thanks again.

Tony
