On Thursday evening, BBC South Today got poor ol' Alina Jenkins to
broadcast the World's first ever weather forecast "live" from a fairground roller-coaster! Now, Alina is my favourite of all current weather presenters - she was for example one of the very first to get the hang of presenting isobar/frontal charts in the BBC's new graphics system - but I generally HATE gimmicky forecasting. So it was going to be interesting to see whether I'd love or hate THIS forecast! Well as it turned out, I loved the fun of it more than I hated the gimmick - for this one time only! I think it's well worth a look at the video they've put up on the BBC South website - so if you're interested, here it is (the web page with the story and a video link at the foot of the page). Enjoy! http://www.bbc.co.uk/hampshire/conte..._feature.shtml -- Dave Fareham. |

Or how about re-enacting a certain Benjamin Franklin weather experiment? -- David Mitchell, 70m amsl, Langtoft, East Riding of Yorkshire. |

Personally, I can't stand all that stupid & gimmicky stuff. You don't present the news from a roller coaster so it beats me why anybody would want to present the weather from one. But if it's real novelty you're after, perhaps they could return to the Atlantic charts *all the time* and not just for the Countryfile forecast. Col -- Bolton, Lancashire. 160m asl. |

Alina Jenkins is just another identikit weather girlie of the type currently fashionable and has no background whatever in weather. Shame on the airheads who suggested this and on her for going along with it. But none of us watches this rubbish, any, or do we? I always feel let down, insulted even, by TV weather forecasts since the advent of the Stupid Graphics. I agree with the general comments about novelty weather forecasts if that means information or understanding is lost but I don't think Alina is "just another identikit weather girlie". As an effective weather presenter, Alina beats most of the others, irrespective of their meteorological knowledge and background; and she has proven to be highly adaptable in new situations (the new graphics system). She has been using Atlantic isobar/frontal charts and has presented proper wind speed/direction indicators from week one of the new system. She demonstrated from the start of the new system that she has acquired a good understanding of everything "meteorological" that a weather presenter needs to know. However, taking part in this roller-coaster gimmick has not helped her image among weather enthusiasts so let's hope it is the one and only time such a thing is attempted - World Record or not. I did enjoy the bit o' fun on this occasion - although it seriously degraded the quality of the actual forecast. -- Dave |
