Many of us have commented on a 2C discrepancy between the Biggin
temperatures and those nearby. I see today there is good agreement, so it would appear some corrective work has been done there. -- Mike 55.13°N 6.69°W Coleraine posted to uk.sci.weather 25/01/2005 10:55:58 UTC |

I am inclined to think that Stansted as well suffers from readings that are
a degree too low. Ian Currie.-Coulsdon "Jon O'Rourke" wrote in message ... "Mike Tullett" wrote in message ... I had a little chat with ATC around 0720Z after they opened up with
7C...they've been having a few problems. Jon. Still looks low to me. The 1300Z METAR has 3°C (Gatwick and Heathrow 5°C), whereas here it has been 4.5 to 5° since 1130Z. My readings should be OK. The thermometer is correct to about 0.1°C, there is a good N'ly breeze and only occasional sunshine on the screen. I'm getting the impression that the problems at Biggin Hill would be solved for all time by the purchase of a mercury-in-glass thermometer (or two). Of course, someone would have to go and read it but Biggin Hill isn't exactly the busiest airport I've seen, believe me. Tudor Hughes, Hamsey Green, Warlingham, Surrey, 556 ft. Ian Currie.-Coulsdon Yes, I've noticed this from time to time Ian. However it does not seem to be a consistent problem. I have Stansted-Epping-London City readings 'as live' on my homepage and generally Stansted is 1° less than Epping, which in turn is 1° less than London City-much as would be expected. But there are occasions when Stansted reports 2° or even 3° cooler with no obvious meteorological explanation. Tends to be daytime readings. No sooner do I start to investigate METAR archives for EGSS than the temperatures fall into line. Perhaps it is an AWS reporting problem rather than AWS measurements. Incidentally I presume that the AWS temperature sensor is attached to the control tower structure (??)-the top of which I can see from here on a clear night. Ian Currie.-Coulsdon Well, I was based at Stansted until I retired just over six years ago. I can tell you, when I did the outside check on the aircraft, it always seemed bl--dy cold to me and I certainly had no reason whatsoever to doubt those readings:-) However, for sheer misery in the cold at 0600 hours on a winter's morning, Glasgow takes some beating. But it was all worth it when you saw the sunrise an hour or so later. Of all the things I miss since retiring, I would say sunrise from 29,000 feet is perhaps the greatest loss. Sunrise is never quite the same at sea level. (The green flash is much rarer for a start). Jack |
