According to my data so far, June's mean is currently 0.8 degC higher
than that of 2003, which was exceptional in itself here in Durham. Only 5 Junes have had a mean above 15.0 degC in Durham, these being 1896 (15.4), 1940 (15.8), 1950 (15.2), 1976 (15.4) and 2003 (15.9). How is it in other parts of the country? Dave in Ferryhill, Co. Durham |

Durham Hi, Dave, Not another part of the country, but another part of the county. Including today's figures, we are standing at a mean of 15.0C (21.8 / 8.2) and 14.5C (21.9 / 7.1) at Lead Mill. I have recorded a June mean above 15C only once since I began in the 1960s and that was 1976 with 15.1C (at Low Etherley 155metres asl). We recorded a high of 30C that month as well! I'm not sure if the 100metres height factor can be applied for Copley as it is further from the North Sea than Etherley which is such a factor in NE England in warm weather. Sunshine in recent Junes has been a disappointment and the sunniest since 2000 has been 2003 with 197hr. March 2003 had more with 200hr and May 2001 had 255hr followed by 126hr in the June Gloom. The 30 year estimate going by the University is 198hr and since 2000 we have averaged only 152hr (May has been 183hr against the estimate of 185hr) We are doing well so far and the current rate would bring 290hr. 300hr sun and a mean of 15C would do me nicely, but it's very early days yet - we're not even half way! Best wishes, Ken Copley, 253metres asl, nr Barnard Castle, County Durham http://copley.mysite.orange.co.uk |
