Far too many FEWs for my liking, almost SAMOS like.. Interesting to see the snow shower though, the 00Z mesoscale did indicate a few light ones over Gatwick way in the evening. Jon. |

Far too many FEWs for my liking, almost SAMOS like.. This happens more often than you might think, Jon. Yesterday at 0900z there was a snow shower here with 3 OKTAS total cloud and at 1200z a sleet shower with 2 OKTAs total cloud. The combined effects of substantial vertical wind shear and the relatively slow rate of fall of snow flakes can result in the shower cloud producing the snow disappearing over the horizon before the last of the snow flakes reach the ground. Mind you, I'm not saying that is what was happening at EGKK :-) Norman. (delete "thisbit" twice to e-mail) -- Norman Lynagh Weather Consultancy Chalfont St Giles 85m a.s.l. England |

I see it as a symptom of the way the SAMOS system deduces cloud amounts from the data presented to it by the laser cloud base recorder. There was an interesting example of this last month at Luton when 8/8 AS/CI was present overhead and yet the METARs were reporting sky clear. There's also the small matter of prevailing/directional visibility which is reported about as often as snow flakes over North Africa :-) Jon. |
