Default SE and S Central looking very dry from the air

Just returned this morning from another overseas trip and was struck
how dry and brown much of SE (especially eastern Essex and central
London) England and South Central (especially near Newbury) England
looked from the air, and it is only mid-July ! It would be interesting
to get some ground reports from Essex...ping Keith ??

Cracking day today...max +27.2 deg. C (+1.5 deg. C 24-hr temp anomaly
for the month so far).

Regards,
Richard.

Newbury aye! I am from the very place and I would say the same.

Harvesting of corn yield has not yet started locally (had started by this
time last year) and also I would say by looking at the crops, they may be
suffering. The downs locally are looking brown where the grass is dying and
soil surfaces are showing large cracks, including in my garden. Many
butterflies are on the wing though and my garden is full of birds, also
desperately drinking and bathing, so it seems these things do have a
positive effect, sometimes.

Kind Regards

Tony

Only 9.0mm for me at Southend-on-Sea Richard, starting to get pretty
parched due to the low humidity, something Will mentioned last week.

A bit more here as we were lucky enough to catch a 10mm downpour on the 5th
although most of it ran off. 15mm so far but only 14mm in June. Played
cricket in mid-north Essex today and the square was very parched and
cracking. Harvest well under way throughout County and a very good one it
looks too.

Talking of brown, my lawn in the front garden gave up the ghost ages ago;
despite heavy rainfall. The back garden has brown patches in the lawn, the
green bits are the weeds and clover.

Strange though, the grass seems to grow in the shade of the trees so
methinks it is the strength of the sun that is killing off the grass. My
runner beans nearly died the other day with the sun on them. I have had to
cover them with shading netting to prevent the leaves burning. This never
used to happen, the sun seems more fierce these days.

Reached 28.8C here at 17:17.

Currently at 22:40, 21.5C, RH 60%, DP 13.3C, 1029 mb (S), Wind calm.

Only 5.7mm here in Epping, but 81% monthly average sunshine already.

All the best

I've finally got my weather records updated now that our phone line has
been reconnected. My monthly rainfall total for July currently stands at
0.0mm but one of my friends said that it did rain about a week or so ago
here - can anyone confirm that? I haven't been out to check the rain
gauge yet though. The last rainfall that I recorded was on the 26th June.
