Brings back memories of the snow fences along Cotswold roads that I used to
drive along in my youth. The whipped ice cream effect of snowdrifts seemed to
be a common sight then, almost yearly.

It appears that many of the snow fences have been removed from the roadsides, as
I haven't seen one in a while along the old Fosse Way Northleach to Cirencester
or Ermine Way (A417) Cirencester to Gloucester.

Most parts of Europe except UK, I think!
Like Martin, I remember those drifts well.

As have lots of the snowboards that I used to see on roofs.

There was nothing better than to see, as a kid, some old scroat being hit
fair-and-square on the back of the neck by a mass of snow that had
avalanched off his roof! Sometimes, we'd see an overhang of snow, judge
when it might be about to slide off and then play knock-down-ginger, to
see if we could catch some miserable git who'd somehow annoyed us through
the year.

We never did, of course - but it was wicked fun to try. By today's
standards we'd be delinquents and we'd probably get an ASBO thrown at us -
or be frogmarched down to the cashpoint to pay an on-the-spot
fixed-penalty fine.

(But, as I thought then and I still think now - I blame Society, m'lud!)

- Tom.
