Just wondering after yesterdays record temps and forecasts for the next few
days looking very warm of the likelihood of this July beating the July 1983 record. Any thoughts? |

The mean temperature for the month so far here (including an assumed max of 29 today) is 19.8° whereas the warmest month (July 1983) had a mean of 20.1°C. To beat that the mean here for the next 11 days will have to be 20.8°C, which looks possible. (Say a mean max of 27 and a mean min of 15). Of course even if this happens the July CET record may not be broken but probably would be. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, NE Surrey, 556 ft. |

Any thoughts? Here, my mean max so far this month is identical to July 1983 so far (26.8°C) but my mean minimum is well down, 11.9°C vs 14.8°C in 1983. As a result the mean temperature to date is over 1 degC lower than July 1983's monthly mean. Now that may not be the case everywhere, because we have caught a few (very welcome!) cool nights this month, probably because of the rural location - some of the local towns have had much higher minima on several nights and the difference may not be so great elsewhere. Of course, the next few days may well bring some very warm nights - oh joy :-( - and this might redress the balance somewhat. But I think without quite a few warm nights to come as well as warm days, we may struggle to reach 1983's CET mean ... Stephen Burt Stratfield Mortimer, Berkshire |
