Bracknell, Berkshire.
Got up first thing this morning (Saturday / 29th July 2006 .. 0500Z), and saw this cirrus variant towards sunrise horizon: the photograph doesn't really do justice to the highly contorted sheaves of ice crystals, made doubly dramatic by being back-lit by the sun on the horizon. (Have slightly raised the 'blue' content of the picture from that captured by the camera.) http://makeashorterlink.com/?Z56921B7D Nearest applicable ascent (not nearest physical ascent) that I can find would be Watnall: shear of direction (and a little speed), between 300 hPa & 250hPa, with the base of a moist layer in the same 'zone'. Not sure if this is the 'perfect' match for the conditions seen, but certainly supports high-level, ice-crystal instability. http://makeashorterlink.com/?L15963B7D Martin. -- Martin Rowley: data via - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/metindex.htm Bracknell (Wooden Hill/Tawfield), Berkshire NGR: SU 854 667 Elev: 80m Lat: 51DEG23MIN30SEC(N): Long: 00DEG46MIN28SEC(W) |
