I have to question the official statistics for Torquay today, 8 miles
down the coast?

According to BBC Ceefax page 407, Torquay was the sunniest place in the
UK with 10.8hrs of sunshine.

It has been virtualy cloudy all day here in Teignmouth, South Devon.

Even allowing for the fact that any sunshine after 18:00 yesterday
would have been included, this is utter nonsense.

Once I get out of the house this morning, I will check the official
Teignmouth sunshine hours for yesterday, but I'm sure it is nowhere
near 10.8hrs for yesterday.

David, the 1700-1700 figure in the papers was 2.8h. Do you have
access to the Teignmouth observer, or is the figure simply posted
on a board or in the local council office window, or something? Do
you know if Teignmouth still uses a Campbell-Stokes recorder?

Torquay, I believe, has an electronic sensor which is clearly set
up incorrectly and records sunshine at too low a threshold. Perhaps
if Torbay Council (or whoever the authority is) were made aware
that we all know they're being economical with the actualité they
might be shamed into having it re-set.

Could the Ceefax page still have been showing the previous day's
reading? At what time of day does the page get updated?

Philip,

The Torquay figures are those that appear on Ceefax page 407.

I will check the 'Western Morning News' later for all of the South West
resorts that report figures.

As for Teignmouth, until recently the official Teignmouth Meterologist
also did a weekly write up in our local paper, and her also questioned
Torquay's figures, and mentioned that Teignmouth still uses
'Campbell-Stokes recorder' whilst Torquay uses an electronic sensor.

I will check the official stats for Teignmouth, posted in the window,
and I can get access to Teignmouth's records if I catch the
Meterologist about 10AM.

Unfortunatly for Torquay, I'm not sure of it's location and don't know
the Meterologist.

Regards,

John, the discrepancy between the two adjacent stations is one
that's been pointed out before, from time to time. The figures for the
10th were (1700z-1700z) Teignmouth 5.3h, Torquay 10.1h.
Aggregates so far this month are Torquay 110.6h, Teignmouth 88.6h,
Weymouth 76.8h, Portland 74.1h. Torquay's aggregate is higher
than all other UK sites (the next sunniest are along the Sussex coast).

This is not the first time this summer that I've noticed Torquay's
sunshine & temps have been excessively high compared to Teignmouth and
surrounding locations.
