Colin, what time span do those rainfall totals cover? I only ask because
Shoeburyness is about 7 miles ESE of me and for the 24 hours 18:00 to
18:00 gmt my total was 19.4mm, some 10mm less, prior to that I had only
recorded 1.0mm. I will have to look in the Torygraph tomorrow to see if
they report Southend-on-Sea as I think they use the 18:00 to 18:00 time
span as well.

Keith,

Rainfall figures come from the Met Office site
http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/...yesterday.html which
says that the period covered is the 24 hours up to 18.00 UTC/GMT.

OGIMET http://makeashorterlink.com/?N334210AD gives 29 mm for
Shoeburyness as does WeatherOnline for that same 24-hour period.

Even so, I still don't understand why there are sometimes discrepancies
between the rainfall figures given on the Met Office site and the totals for
what is supposedly the same 24-hour period quoted on other websites.

The Kenley figure of 30.0 mm looks highly suspect to me and is
probably 20.0 mm. At 18Z Wednesday there was probably at least 1 mm
in my gauge from earlier light showers and the total I measured this
morning (Thursday) was 20.7 mm and there has been no rain since. I am
1½ miles ENE of Kenley and at a similar altitude. Peter Clarke in
Ewell recorded 20.4 mm and 19 mm was recorded in Horsham and I think
there was a similar amount at Charlwood.

29mm at Southend too ... for the whole event, that is. However, it is not
beyond the bounds of possibility that whoever compiles the resort list
at the MO substitutes Shoeburyness if Southend is, for whatever reason,
unavailable. It helps make the list look more complete and themselves
more efficient.
