Beautiful clouds in between Canterbury and Folkestone this afternoon. A
cross between Pileus and Lenticularis is the best way I can describe them.
Stunning! And I left my damn camera at home!

Smooth, well defined brownish, grey, purple swathes. Some associated with
other clouds (pileus) then sweeping into clear blue sky (lenticularis). The
wavelike top edge so sharp, yet the shapes so flowing. They looked
artificial in their smooth, airbrushed shades and shapes.

Did anyone else see them?

Best I can do in text....What a day to forget the digicam. Still kicking
myself!

Ah ha. Good example of pileus captured by my webcam at 11:58 this morning:

http://www.jstott.me.uk/temp/11-58-34.jpg

It only lasted barely two minutes. There's a nice sequence showing it
forming and dissipating:

Yes, it's a shame that my webcam only has a narrow field of view. The
trees and buildings obscure the view somewhat too

Is there a name for pileus that is not asociated with other clouds or
mountains etc? Much of the cloud today was not a cap of any kind. Same
texture, same smooth wavelike shape but in rolling sheets and seperate from
other clouds... Lenticularis is the right texture but seems too regular..
