![]() "Yannis & Wijke" wrote in message ... Good evening everyone. We were just sitting under +38.5C (today's max) and were thinking about our dream winter. Wijke wants the first snow to settle on dutch grounds around mid December and settled conditions thereafter, so that temperatures drop considerably and ice is allowed to form in the open. An anticyclone should then form over N or NW Europe and allow very cold air masses to go all the way down to Greece, thus resulting in massive snowfall events around Athens. The Netherlands will be lounging below a really cold air pool until mid March, while record low temperatures should be observed in Greece. Anyone care share their dream winter with us? P.S.: We understand that our assumptions may be contradicting the basics of atmosphere physics, but we truely believe that our dream senario is feasible, given a spell of increased seismicity on Mars and Venus in mid November (earth time) ;-) Yannis, Wijke, SE Athens +32.6C, RH 28% I love it. wouldn't it be a change to have a good cold frosty winter instead of the usual grey mild muck that we now have. I think that what you have described is in some ways possible. If someone had told me that I would record 38C here in my garden on a north facing wall in the shade I would have laughed at them. As 38C was recorded in at least 5 other places in my home area, I know that the reading is accurate. If you can get 38C in Britain then anything is possible. However, we don't get cold winters now do we? -- ************************************************** ************************** ************************************************** * Gavin Staples. website updated regularly www.gavinstaples.com For the latest news on the UK heat-wave, click on my URL, and then click on weather forecast. ![]() Well, seeing as this summer looks to be heading into the "very warm" category, a comparative glimpse into the past throws up an interesting scenario, for this area at least... The "very warm" summer of 1976 was followed by a notably cold and snowy winter. The "very warm" summer of 1983 was followed by a notably cold and snowy winter. The "very warm" summer of 1995 was followed by a notably cold and snowy winter. The "very warm" summer of 2000 was followed by a notably cold and snowy winter. The warmest summers of the last 30 years have all thrown up cold and snowy winters here. Please note, this was the situation for the central lowlands of Scotland. Others may wish to add if the same situation was thrown up elsewhere. Alex. "Gavin Staples" wrote in message ... Alex. jan.84 had some very low temperatures feb 96 had some significant snow dont know about the rest the very warm aug.97 was followed by a miserably mild winter 97/98 on other hand ![]() incidentally the 15 days in a row above 26.7 (or 80F) from aug.97 is still a record for me, this august did throw 11 in a row tho. only have records back to mid 90s. joe, bedford. |

I wouldn't mind getting a similar winter to the last one or that of 1991/1992 (Colin's post on record low water levels in Sep '91). I'll have to take a better look at past years' data to answer Alex's question and see what average Julies/Augusts, like the ones we're experiencing in Athens so far, are usually followed by -not that I'd bet I'd expect to find any decent p-values anyway. Sleepy cheers, Yannis, SE Athens +27.4C, RH 35% http://dias.aueb.gr/~ikarag/everyday/august03.html |
