Martin. -- Martin Rowley meteorology @ bracknell E: W: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.weather/metindex.htm Yes Martin, you are not wrong there. Fortunately I had a willing helper, my wife, who is a real ace with the spade. We spent several hours digging out the large screen, and making a new hole for it. Also fortunately, although the ground is stone dry, apart from hidden bits of brick and concrete, the earth was mostly crumbly. We were able to run a couple of months comparison for air temps, and the new site has a better exposure for all directions except the east, and the average difference for max and min is about 0.3C, lower at the new site. Unlike the Secondary Sch, where all the buildings are at least 2 storeys high, most of the Junior Sch is one storey, and the new site has a much more open feel to it. The head is very willing to have the station there, but the Town Clerk is negotiating a lease with the District, just in case. I am also taking the opportunity to install some automatic equip, (Campbell Scientific), and should be able to interrogate it remotely. This is due to arrive next week. It will consist of air temp and humidity in an aspirated shield, rainfall (0.1 mm tipping bucket, heated), and pressure. Electronic earth probes have also been installed (another lot of hard digging!), and are connected to a TinyTag data logger. Taking 1 reading every 3 minutes this self contained unit can run for over one month without being off loaded, resolution 0.01C, accuracy +-0.05C, and offloading is a simple operation onto a PC, where the accompanying program can produce graphs or text lists. Well worth the money. Bernard |

Bernard I guess like me (I used to work at Emmbrook) you knew it was inevitable sometime. Maybe the new site will be less enclosed and therefore better. Sorry if I have got that wrong - a total interested amateur here. Will you still use the computer facilites at the secondary to report in? Jane |

Jane Yes Jane, we were trying to put off the evil day, but the head was set on having more parking space. The Town Council had been negotiating a lease for the site, and John Goulborn was in favour of that while he was there, but the District stalled, I guess because they were bowing to pressure from the current head. But I hear from the Town Clerk that a lease is on offer for the new site, so the town may yet get a secure station plot. Yes too, the new site is more open, and has a better exposure. The old site had become rather sheltered, especially in the last couple of years, as my attempts to get the trees along the brook lopped came to nothing. When we installed the weather station at the Secondary School in 1976, the area was quite open, and the Rivers Authority (or maybe Thames Water then), used to clear the banks of the Emm every year, but not any more. It is now the responsibility of the Environment Agency, but they only appear when a tree actually falls into the brook. As well as the trees, the school buildings have gradually been added to, and that didn't help the exposure much either. I do not use the computer facilities at the school, but have all my own gear at home, including satellite tracking station etc. All the data is stored and distributed from here. Do feel free to call if you would like to have a tour..my e-mail address in on the Wokingham Weather web site. Bernard |

I would love to look one day, but I left Emmbrook because we moved down to Surrey. However, I will contact you if I am back "home" sometime. Sorry, I thought you used the school as a base, but your suberb website is obviously housed on a better computer than the school could furnish! Jane |
