Default January 2005: Synoptic Overview

Mean sea-level pressure
The Icelandic Low was split and appreciably deeper than
normal: the main centre, 990 mbar, was located in the
northeastern Norwegian Sea at approx 72N 10E, with
a second centre, 995mbar, near Cape Farewell. The
Azores High was much more intense than usual and
displaced ENE-wards, centred near Corunna at 1029
mbar. There was a shallow low, 1016 mbar, over
southern Italy.
The mean flow over the British Isles was from
slightly north of west (280 deg), and was considerably
strong than normal.

Sea-level pressure anomaly (wrt 1961-90)
Main anomaly centres we
-13mbar in the northeast Norwegian Sea
+13mbar between the Azores and Ireland
The anomalous flow over the British Isles was
northwesterly, and differences from normal
ranged from -2mbar at Lerwick to +10mbar
at Valentia.

The maps will appear on the website in a day
or two.

CET: 6.1șC (+1.9 degC wrt 1971-2000)
EW rain: 55.3mm (59%)
EW sun: 62.7 hr (114%)

It was the warmest Jan since 1990 and the
equal sixth warmest in the last 100 years.
It was the driest since 2000, and the 17th
driest in the last 100 years. It was the sunniest
since 2003 and the 20th sunniest in the last
100 years.

CScotT: 5.9șC (+2.3 degC)
Scot Rain: 146mm (145%)
Scot Sun: 38h (86%)

NI T: 6.8șC (+1.9 degC)
NI Rain: 89mm (96%)
NI Sun: 43h (85%)

Default January 2005: Synoptic Overview

Thanks for this detailed summary. I cannot remember a January when its
weather was dominated so persistently by a High to the west of Ireland. Can
you tell us when was the last such occasion, please?
