Given that there was complete synoptic volte-face at the end of
July, the mean sea-level synoptic field for the summer quarter
showed a much weaker version of the June/July pattern;
the cyclonic/northwesterly August was naturally not sufficient
to offset the anticyclonic/southeasterly June and July.

The Icelandic Low at 1009mbar in Denmark Strait was
slightly deeper than normal while the Azores high 1025mbar just
southwest of the Azores was normal in location and intensity
although the characteristic summertime ridge to France and
central Europe was stronger than normal.

The main anomaly centres were +3mbar over the northern
Baltic, -1.5mbar in Denmark Strait, and -1.5mbar near
Madeira. Over the British Isles pressure was 0.0-1.0mbar
above normal, with a weak E to SEly anomalous flow.

EW rainfall: 152.5mm ( 88 per cent)
EW sunshine: 715.7mm (119 per cent)

Rainfall totals ranged from 333mm at Capel Curig (Snowdonia)
to 59mm at Thorney Island (Hants); percentages varied between
151 at Herne Bay (Kent) and 29 at Shobdon (Herefs).

Sunshine totals ranged from 921h at Shanklin (IoW) to
329h at Stornoway (W.Isles); percentages varied between
135 at Ross-on-Wye (Herefs) and 72 at Stornoway.
