Winds dropped right off now. Maximum gust here just 47mph at around
17:00, not even a gale away from the immediate sea front. Sea quite
rough for a couple of hours. No rain. Big non event. In the last 15
years I have recorded 281 days with stronger gusts! The only place to
get anything remotely severe was Scilly.

Of note was the swell on the north coast this afternoon, which those of
you in the SW may have seen on Spotlight. 8'-10' at Newquay at times.
The report also mentioned the Cribbar at Fistral. For a pic of someone
riding a 20' Cribbar wave see
www.easterling.freeserve.co.uk/NQYBig.html.

That's it, I promise to stay on topic & not mention surf again for a
while.

Just heard, there was a bit of flooding on the prom, the road was
closed for a while, so not a complete non event after all. Mind you,
the prom is closed on several high tides a year.

Why worry according to the media we are all doomed. By 2027 we will be
water world. Now all you so called experts how true is this? There is no
way GW is going away, China will see to that. Are we all doomed?

Of course not. It's all superhyped b*ll***s from the doom merchants, and
those who would have us all live like cavemen whilst ripping us off in
"green" taxes, all of which will make bugger all difference to anything.

If the climate's changing, then the climate's changing - however hard we may
think we are going to stop it. End of story.

There's been a lot of uncertainty with this one all along, Graham, which I
thought had been conveyed well enough so I guess it comes down to your own
expectations. The current obs indicate there's a decent gale in the W (gust
59KT at Rosslare for example) and the risk of severe gales was high enough
to warrant some flash warnings for the extreme W. 40KT gusts inland
certainly made tennis a bit tricky here this evening :-)

At least the surfers were happy
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/cornwall/5368856.stm
my mum also commented on the decent swell/surf to the east near
Christchurch.

I didn't mean my post to be critical of the forecast, it was certainly
a tricky one. I was just commenting that in the event, unless you were
on Scilly, nothing out of the ordinary happened. Apart from the
predictable & routine problems at Dawlish!

Not particularly out of the ordinary here (NI) for the autumn, but at its
worst, 100,000 homes lost power last night with over 500 incidents of
damage to the overhead lines.
