Keith
looks like it could be in Iran near the Caspian Sea. The ob appears in
the Iranian group of obs and the ob is similar to Gorgan (40738). My
positioning may be out but the country is probably correct.

Could be completely wrong but I came up with a US buoy at 30N 88W !

Yes John, that also fits in with the 'odd' times that the climate data
is reported for Iran. I couldn't find it in the wmo flatfile(s), hence I
asked the question. I beleive that the 99*** series are fixed bouys
eg 8 FIXED SHIP STATIONS / STATIONS SUR NAVIRES A POSITION FIXE FIXED
SHIP STATIONS 8010 10087 99020 0 AMI (RESEARCH VESSEL) 71 30N 19 00E
The temperatures and sunshine don't fit with 40738 looking through the
last 24 hours worth of code.
However, we're homing in.

Thanks

Thanks Jon,

That would be In the Gulf of Mexico just south of Mobile, Alabama. Not
sure that fits in with the times of climate reporting. Tx 15:00, Tn
03:00, Sun 18:00 and rainfall 06:00. Only Iran reports at those times. I
guess we just need to find the Long/Lat coordinates.

The details are

STATION: DB272/992720
ELEVATION: 0000m MSL (0ft MSL)
CITY: ENVIRONM BUOY 42015 LAT/LONG: 30.12°N 088.12°W (30°07'N
088°07'W)

It seems to be a WMO number for Environ Buoy in the GOM. It seems to be
reporting via ship obs on ID 42015

Regards
Paul

..... well, its to be hoped the CIA aren't monitoring this ng, as they
are paranoid enough about Iran - if they knew that Tehran had a buoy
drifting about at that location they would go ballistic - literally!

Looking at the various 'weather' groups, I'd go for a platform/rig in
the southern Caspian that they haven't been given a WMO number for, OR,
that they don't want to be known.

Martin.

LOL

Thanks Paul & Martin, I don't think we can be sure exactly where it is,
I'll keep an eye on it to compare weather with what we think maybe
nearby locations. Even so, no point adding it to my lists if we don't
know where it ie ;-)

A visit to the Iranian met service's excellent website, Allahu Akbar,
provides some fascinating reading. Special Caspian Sea networks
have been developed over the last 10-15 years for a variety of projects:
http://www.irimet.net/irimo/hycos_project.htm
and station 99272 may well be one of these.

A further Google search on "irimet.net" and "99272" shows up what
appear to be climatological tables, which show that 99272 is 36.7m
above sea-level, and the ICAO code is GIRR. However ICAO
don't list GIRR, so maybe it is a local code for a secondary or
tertiary network. Further Googling may get your there!

Philip
