If the predicted cold outbreaks hits us next week and we get some snow ,that will set off all the 'experts ', like The Sun, saying 'told you so ,the weather in America always gets to Gt.Britain a few days later '.Might give P.Eden apoplexy.........?I know, I've had to patiently explain to people in the past that the weather simply doesn't work like that! -- Col Bolton, Lancashire 160m asl Join the club! It's one of those latter-day urban myths in which people like to display what they imagine is their knowledge. Another example has hit me recently, having bought a new (i.e. newer) piano. People ask "Is it iron-frame" to which I'm tempted to reply "Nah, mate, PVC. Lighter". Pianos have always had iron frames though details of construction have changed. Trouble is that there's sometimes some truth in this urban myth. If a cold plunge occurs over the eastern US, it can lead to another plunge over the UK a few days later as the jet buckles. As to piano construction, iron frames were developed and introduced in the first half of the nineteenth century. Anyway, the question "is it iron-frame?" would still seem to be a tad superfluous. If the piano was an upright, without seeing it I might have asked "is it overstrung?" but perhaps that question now is almost as obsolete. -- Graham Davis Bracknell Yes, that's true but I don't think even an educated non-meteorologist's understanding extends to that depth, and it's certainly not a very reliable indicator. As to the piano, yes, it's overstrung, unlike the old one I had (Ibach, 1903). The total tension, in reply to someone else, is about 30 tons. The new one cost £1000. A grand for an upright, you could say. Tudor Hughes, Warlingham, Surrey. |
