=== This forecast represents the *PERSONAL OPINION* of the Chief forecaster at the privately run Haytor meteorological office in Devon on how the weather may unfold next week. The Chief forecaster will take no responsibility whatsoever for any actions arising from its use. It is provided freely in the spirit of freedom and the great love for meteorology that we personally enjoy and wish to share freely with others. ================================================== ============================== === Summary valid for Sunday 22/10/06 to Saturday 28/10/06 TOI (time of issue) Friday 20/10/06 1800 UK local time This summary is based on a quick appraisal of the GFS, JMA, ECMWF, UKMO, FAX, and ENS (NCEP ensemble) labelled charts available from the superb http://www.wetterzentrale.de/topkarten Well as hinted in last week's forecast when confidence on timing was low the colder air is taking its time pushing south. However, I am still confident in the sequence of colder air pushing south across Britain during next week, less confident on when. At least from Sunday to Tuesday it looks like we will have a continuation of present conditions. that is, spells of rain, sometimes heavy, interspersed with drier interludes. Winds generally light to moderate and variable in direction with continued risk of fog at night. Temperatures generally above average with pockets of ground frost at night. However, on Tuesday it should turn colder in northern Scotland with temperatures falling during the day up there. On Wednesday and Thursday there is a risk of strong to gale force easterly winds in the south with heavy rain otherwise slowly turning colder from the north as a moderate north or northwesterly breeze sets in. As the colder air spreads south it should turn brighter with sunny spells and showers, showers mainly on windward coasts and hills and turning wintry over the Highlands. On Friday and Saturday pressure is expected to build and the weather should quieten down and turn mainly dry with winds turning light. Spells of sunshine by day but with fog and frost becoming more widespread overnight, lingering into the day in places. Temperatures becoming below normal ranging from 7C in Scotland and the foggy areas to 11C in the southwest. Lower confidence in southwest winds returning to Scotland later introducing milder air again and spells of rain. Agreed! Can't wait to start burning my logs either. Heating still not on as the house is maintaining a comfortable 15-16C without it in the mild conditions. Will. -- |

Will. -- I would need to install an air conditioning unit to keep temperatures inside as low as that at present. It's 14C outside at present and the maximum for the last few days has been around 17 to 18C so inside it is getting up to 20C easily. It must be quite cool in Haytor. Alan |

About the same as here - just put in 270mm of insulation in the new
extension roofspace so it'll be nice and cosy all winter! I've just finished fitting the recommended 270 mm thickness of insulation in my loft, plus I have 170 mm of insulation under the floors (a summer long arduous job), and had cavity-wall insulation done last month, plus with the permissive-E double glazing throughout I am now astonished at how warm the house is. The thermostat is set to switch on the heating if the temperature in the hall (coldest part of the house) goes below 22C, so far this autumn the lowest temperature in the house has been 23C so the heating has yet to come on. In the evening the lounge easily heats up 26C due to the warmth given off by the TV and ourselves. If it has been a sunny day then we have to open quite a few windows because it does get too hot, even at this time of year. I have to sleep with the window open in the bedroom because it gets too hot in the room as the night progresses. _______________ Nick G Otter Valley, Devon 80 m amsl http://www.ottervalley.co.uk |

I agree - the extension holds the heat very well now as it catches the sun all day.... the rest of the house is stone so not quite up to regs!
