Current 10-minute average wind speed 51.4 mph ENE, Severe Gale F9,
gusting to 65 mph. The AWS has recorded 47mm rain since midnight, but I suspect a good deal more than that has blown straight over the top of the gauge. Pressure 974mb, now steady. No flooding in the immediate vicinity, but Kirkwall on Orkney Mainland has a few problems: http://www.orcadian.co.uk/archive/2006/floodgallery.htm The ferries are cancelled but the morning flight came in only 30 minutes late with the post. It was quite impressive, watching him land in an F8 crosswind. -- Steve Loft Sanday, Orkney. 5m ASL http://sanday.org.uk/weather |

Hi Steve - welcome to the 'real' weather!
Much the same here - mean speed 41-46kt last 6 hours, from 060deg slowly backing 030deg. Max gst 64kt. Vis generally 1000-2000m in rain and spray. I've recorded only 27.3mm from 21z/25-15z/26. Pressure here just bottomed out at 977.0hPa. Temperature a miserable 7 to 8C. Though I'd describe this as a 'normal' autumn gale, the direction is not that common. In this part of the world, when we have a low moving east across northern Scotland you always find lots of rain as the wrap-around occlusion stalls somewhere over the Northern Isles before being dragged clear as the low tracks away east. Similar situation in winter, with the right conditions, and a huge amount of snow can result! Dave, Fair Isle "Steve Loft" wrote in message m... Hi Steve
81mph at Lerwick and 84mph off at Skule according to weatheronline. Meanwhile the odd wheelie bin has been tipped, way down here in Aberfeldy. Did you make sure you lowered your wheelie bin anchor? Brian
I think Dave and Steve will be starting to experience those higher wind speeds soon as the low moves away eastwards, backing and increasing here now, as forecast. SST is still 12-13C around here so plenty of energy to boost the low as it heads for Norway. It haven't been following the MSLP charts, but is this the low that hit the round the world sailors in the Bay of Biscay a couple of days ago? Karl Cooper, Orkney |

But the large plastic coal bunker did decide to make a break for it, I caught up with it just before it hopped over into the next field. Persuading it back again was "exhilarating" and it's now weighted down with a full calor gas cylinder. -- Steve Loft Sanday, Orkney. 5m ASL http://sanday.org.uk/weather |

Hi Steve - welcome to the 'real' weather! Thanks, Dave. I knew the weather had just been fooling us so far. We haven't quite managed Force 10 yet, max 10-min speed so far 47.5 kts/54.7 mph NNE, gusting to 62.1 kts/71.5 mph. -- Steve Loft Sanday, Orkney. 5m ASL http://sanday.org.uk/weather |

Fair Isle 1755z 020deg 51kt gust 67kt; 2200m in moderate rain; Temp 5.2 dp
4.7C; QNH 982.8hPa +5.7hPa last 3 hours; 29.1mm since 06z (35.4mm since 21z on 25th); max 8.7C min 5.2 Winds have been averaging 48-51kt last couple of hours here on Fair Isle. Gusting 67kt. Very surprised to hear that the Northlink ferry was to leave Aberdeen for Lerwick this evening. Seas around Fair Isle (seen just before darkness fell) are absolutely horrendous! Estimate 7-8 metre swell at least! Contrary to what I said on an earlier posting re flooding here - the West Road on Fair Isle is presently not advised due to flooding above the croft of Lower Leogh!! Some damage in Shetland. A fence down blocking a footpath, a tree(s) in Lerwick blown down (can't afford to lose too many!!). More seriously a house has reportedly lost a roof on the island of Yell.
