uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Fractals.

I noticed a similarity in the schema of the hurricane in this link. The
page is about cyclones generally and I must say the author has in line
with the most scholarly understandings mixed symptoms with causes but
the ideas are there.

The sketch is found above this description:

"Hurricanes intensify when condensation of water vapor in rising air
releases heat energy into storm, setting off a chain reaction. The heat
makes the surrounding air more buoyant, causing it to rise further.

To compensate for the rising air, surrounding air sinks. The sinking
air is compressed by the weight of the air above it, and it warms. The
pressure rises at the top of the layer of warmed air, pushing air
outward. As the air spreads outward, the total air pressure at the
surface drops.

The more the pressure drops, the more the winds intensify, drawing more
heat and moisture from the ocean surface. (Graphic by Robert Simmon,
NASA GSFC.)"

And the parallel it reminded me of is the simple model of the Hadley
cells et al centred on the equator. Speaking of which the equator is a
fence on which the theory falls:

"The storm takes the distinctive, spiraling hurricane shape because of
the Coriolis Force, generated by the rotation of the Earth. This is the
same force that causes the south-blowing African jet to bend westward
over the Atlantic, spawning easterly waves.

In the Northern Hemisphere, the Earth's rotation causes moving air to
veer to the right. As air rushes towards the low-pressure center of the
storm at the Earth's surface, it curves right. If the storm is far
enough from the equator (generally at least 8 degrees of latitude), the
deflection or curvature is great enough that the air starts spinning
counterclockwise around the center of the storm."

There is no force, per se, in the Coriolis effect. And the idea is a
misnomer as chirality occurs with almost exact duplication however
closely (or for that matter from however far back) you look at god's
tangible creation.

But it was the thrown away line: "(generally at least 8 degrees of
latitude)" that had me piqued. Seasoned adherent to my warbling will
know why.
