uk.sci.weather (UK Weather) (uk.sci.weather) For the discussion of daily weather events, chiefly affecting the UK and adjacent parts of Europe, both past and predicted. The discussion is open to all, but contributions on a practical scientific level are encouraged.

Default Newbie question: Weather information for Gibraltar - Madeira

In a week's time I'm going to be setting off to sail on a tall ship from
Gibraltar to Madeira. I have no idea what the weather is likely to be,
except vague tourist-friendly spiel about the lovely weather on the
island itself.

Can anyone recommend somewhere that I might find out typical (or even
forecast, now we're getting closer) conditions for that part of the
Atlantic, both day and night. I want to work out what clothes to pack.

I realise this isn't a "scientific" question, so apologies if it falls
totally outside the bounds of the group.

Thanks,

Pete

As of November 2, the temperature in Gibraltar was low 20s by day, dropping to
19 or so at night. It had been mainly sunny for a few days but rained a little
on that day, with a period of overcast skies expected thereafter.

I do not know if that helps - this might ...

I'm not a "scientific" member(mainly lurking) but if you can read
charts look at

http://www.weather.org.uk/charts/thumbs.html

which has isobars and fronts (like the "old" weather forecasts on the
tele).

At top or bottom of this information page you can Insert LXGB for Gib, LPFU
for Funchal Maderia or any other ICAO for the world. I hope it works OK for
you. I'm not sure how accurate it is and of course it is the output of one
model only.
Remember this is for a grid point, which will probably not refelect local
winds to lee of the mountains etc.

Some of these sites may give you what you want:-

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/booty.w...FAQ/3.htm#3.18

As to forecast conditions, then others have suggested computer-generated
output, but these are unreliable for small islands groups, particularly
as regards temperatu I'm not sure I'd use them even for Gib., which
also has a climate of its own & which automated output finds difficult
to capture!

Right by the control tower at Gibraltar airport is the Met Office. Give
them a call (it should be in the phone book) and they will be able to
give you a five day forecast. They will probably charge you but for
that they will be able to give you charts. I used to work there - they
are very good but may have gone downhill since I left!

Yes, and unfortunately it's for a point on land. I'm more concerned
about conditions at sea, to know whether I need to put lots of T-shirts
or several warm jumpers into my limited space.
