More heavy rain overnight bringing the total for the 72 hours ending
09:00 today to 62.3mm Sunny spells, scattered sharp showers & good visibility now. I still haven't recorded a gale this year (or even a gust to 50mph!) which is quite remarkable. Number of Gales '93 12 94 17 95 15 96 11 97 20 98 25 99 17 Average for 1993-1999 17 This is much the same as H H Lamb shows for Penzance for 1931-60 (The far SW is the windiest part of England, 30 gales per year near the Lizard point) 00 17 01 5 02 15 03 9 04 12 05 7 06 0! What has happenned, possibly down to a lack of wave depressions taking the required route? There have been gales right on the sea front, especially near headlands. There has also been a consistently large swell this Autumn, so plenty of wind over the Atlantic. In case anyone thinks I've been inconsistent in the grey area of it being 'almost a gale but not quite' the number of days with gusts 50mph show a very similar pattern. Strongest gust this year just 49mph on 1st January, strongest this Autumn 46mph. I suspect that both these days would have been incorrectly considered gales many living in the sheltered SE.
