Default Autumn temperature (with a few days to go)

Bracknell (Tawfield)
In a composite Easthampstead Park / Tawfield record starting 1971, the
previous warmest Autumn occurred last year (2005), with an average
across the three months September, October & November of 11.7ºC; prior
to that, the year 1999, with 11.5ºC was the warmest.

This year (2006) we look set to comprehensively top these values: as at
(09Z/25th November), the value is 12.7ºC.

(At present, if December turns out to have an 'average' temperature,
then we will also have the warmest year in that 36yr series.)

Martin.

Great stuff Martin, I love all these stats.

I thought I'd have a look at my data set which goes back to 1978 and I
follow very much the same theme as Martin:

Using November's current *Mean* average to date of 9.4°c the stats for
the three months of Autumn look like this for me at Southend-on-Sea.

2006 14.0°c
1999 13.0°c
1978 12.9°c
2005 12.7°c

1993 9.8°c (Coldest Autumn Average)

Again assuming an average December 2006 the Yearly average for 2006 does
not come out the warmest for me:

1990 & 1999 11.9°c
2006 & 2003 11.8°c
1989 & 2000 11.7°c

1986 9.7°c (Coldest Yearly Average)
***********************
Looking through some local data going back to 1960, 1961 stands out as
both a mild Autumn (11.5°c) and a mild year (11.3°c).
1968 had the same value autumn as 1961 (11.5°c). I must add I can't
compare the figures with my own

*Martin what was your 1978 figure?* As this was my first full year of
taking readings the accuracy is probably less than it is today :-)

***********************
I always have look at this but the winters following these previous warm
autumns were far from mild.

1962 Average temps for that decade.
1969 Mild January, Cold February
1979 Very cold January & February
2000 Generally very mild
2006 Colder than most of the previous ones back to 1997. We also had
some near misses from the continent.
2007 ?

*Martin what was your 1978 figure?*

.... bear in mind that my series is a composite of the nearby
Easthampstead Park (to 1999), then my own records from then - the
latter, for these purposes are adjusted to agree with the EP series.

1978 Autumn has a value of 11.0°C, well outside the 'top-10' of warmest
autumns.

Martin.
