This image had all the appearance of a smoke or dust plume, and its location
seems at first glance to show a source in southwest Iberia. However, checking the plume in the various spectral channels available from the NOAA18 pass, it became obvious that it was in fact at cirrus levels, and is associated with enhanced contrail activity. The GFS chart for 300 mbar shows that the plume lies on the right hand side of an extension of the Atlantic mid-latitude jet stream. http://www.woksat.info/etck29/ok29-1356-d-ib-s.html -- Bernard Burton Wokingham, Berkshire, UK.
