My feelings are that the severe gales forecast for overnight
will be something of a non-event. Sure, a wet and wnndy
night but nothing out of the ordinary for the time of year.
After a lull on Sunday morning the real fun begins when
that nasty looking occulusion (bent back?) comes through
with very strong winds on it's southern flank.

I think the wind in the south will be strongest on the first occlusion just
before the sharpish veer. That's when the strong gusts will be. Yes the squeeze
in the westerlies still looks quite nasty up north and it is something I
highlighted in my weekly forecast last thursday. I'm expecting 50-60 mph gusts
at my house tonight (in shelter) low prob of 70 mph on the front, but generally
over 70 mph on the open moor. Quite lively tomorrow at altitude with gusts over
70 mph above 500m asl. So nothing special for the time of year up here.

I reckon it will be good fun boating along the Bridgewater Canal
tomorrow. Better still, the summit of the Leeds and Liverpool!
Working a 70ft narrowboat in a gale is really a great challenge ( well
60ft max up there!)

We finally get on top of the Aussies in the cricket and it looks like a
gale will cause disruption to the play!

According to EuroTempest:

All the following applies between now and the 7th December.

The strongest gusts are expected around the far SW, Wales and SW Scotland
with gusts expected around 70-85 mph. For the far SW, the probability of
exceedance of 75mph winds is close to 90%, with near 100% probabilities for
SW and W Scotland. For N Wales and Cumbria probability of exceeding 75mph
gusts is around 60%.

Damage: Major damage forecast in W Scotland, moderate damage for Cornwall,
far SW Scotland and Cumbria, minor damage for N Wales, Pembrokeshire, Outer
Hebrides and Caithness, very little damage elsewhere. Probability of major
damage or worse is highest in Scotland at 25%, moderate damage in this area
around 70-80%. Moderate danage likely to 80% in Cornwall with 45-50%
probability of moderate damage or worse in Cumbria.

I think it could well be a significant gale here in the far SW. It's
already gusted to 50 knots near Land's End.

Also the strongest winds are likely just after midnight, coinciding
with high tide, I am quite pleased I don't live on the prom, it was bad
enough a couple of days ago.

There is also a massive swell forecast, 20' out at Sennen for tomorrow.
I hope to go out and get some photos.

A real challenge is a narrowboat on a river navigation. The current takes
you one way, the wind wants to take you another...

Will you please stop mentioning that "damage" word. The barn roof was
making some rather alarming rattling ripply noises during the F8 gusting
to 50mph+ for most of the 30th. B-(

Anyway a warm 5C and only an F6 25mph SW'ly currently. But the pressure
has started to drop in the last couple of hours and the wind speed
correspondingly starting to increase.

Would you be able to find out what there might be at Portland Bill - I
think I may get back and down there at 1600 for high tide- often
quite a few people view rough conditions
